Iran accused Britain, France and Germany on Monday of breaching the 2015 nuclear accord and said the three European powers have forfeited their role in the agreement after backing recent U.S. strikes on Iranian targets. Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the so-called E3 lacks any legal, political or moral standing to activate the accord’s “snapback” mechanism, which would restore United Nations sanctions. Tehran, he added, will not recognize the measure, formally known as UN Resolution 2231. Despite the sharp rhetoric, Iran has accepted an E3 request for a new round of negotiations in Istanbul in the coming days, according to state television. The European trio warned last week that they were prepared to trigger snapback because of Iran’s expanding atomic activities. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action limits Iran’s stockpile of low-enriched uranium to 202.8 kilograms, among other caps. The United States exited the pact in 2018 and re-imposed its own sanctions, prompting Tehran to step up enrichment. The UN snapback provisions expire on 18 October 2025.
