Iran’s regular navy has begun a two-day exercise dubbed “Sustainable Power 1404” in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean, according to state media reports confirmed by Reuters. The drill, which started on 21 August, involves warships, submarines, drones, missiles and electronic-warfare units targeting mock objectives on the high seas. It is Iran’s first independent military exercise since a 12-day conflict with Israel in June that saw Israeli and short-lived U.S. airstrikes damage Iranian nuclear facilities and kill several senior officers and scientists. The defence ministry said any new “adventures” by its adversaries would meet a “painful response,” underscoring heightened tensions in the region.
