Israel said its air force struck Houthi military infrastructure in and around Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Sunday, two days after the Iran-backed group launched what the Israel Defense Forces described as its first ballistic missile tipped with a cluster warhead toward Israeli territory. According to Israeli military and media reports, more than ten fighter jets dropped over 35 precision-guided munitions on targets that included a military compound incorporating the disused presidential palace, the Assar and Haziz power stations, and a fuel storage site allegedly used for Houthi operations. Yemeni witnesses and local outlets counted at least 15 explosions, citing additional hits on an oil company facility on Al-Sittin Street. A Houthi official said the raids damaged civilian energy infrastructure and vowed the group would continue its campaign in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Israel framed the strikes as retaliation for repeated Houthi attacks and an escalation represented by Friday’s cluster-armed missile, part of a broader regional confrontation that has periodically disrupted Red Sea shipping lanes since 2023.
