Israel’s military said its air force struck multiple Houthi-controlled sites in and around Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on Sunday, targeting what it described as military infrastructure used to launch attacks on Israel. The operation involved more than 10 fighter jets that fired roughly 35–40 guided munitions at a compound housing the presidential palace, the Asar and Hizaz power plants and a nearby fuel depot, according to an Israeli statement. Houthi-run Al-Masirah television and the group’s health ministry said the strikes killed at least two people and wounded 35. A later tally carried by Houthi media put the death toll at four with 67 injured. Residents reported large explosions, fires and widespread power outages in the capital after the midday bombardment. The Israel Defense Forces described the raid as a direct response to a ballistic missile launched from Yemen on Friday that Israeli officials say carried a cluster-bomb warhead—a capability not previously attributed to the Iran-backed Houthis. The missile broke up over central Israel without causing casualties but heightened Israeli concerns about a widening threat envelope. Since Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza began in October 2023, the Houthis have repeatedly fired drones and missiles toward Israel and attacked commercial shipping in the Red Sea, framing the actions as support for Palestinians. Israel has answered with sporadic strikes on Houthi targets, but Sunday’s raid was the heaviest reported in weeks and underscores the continuing regional spill-over of the Gaza conflict.
