Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israel is willing to support Lebanon’s newly announced plan to disarm the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement by the end of 2025. In a statement released by his office, Netanyahu called the Lebanese cabinet’s decision “momentous” and said it presents an opportunity for both countries to pursue greater stability. Netanyahu pledged that, should the Lebanese Armed Forces take concrete steps toward disarming Hezbollah, Israel would enact “reciprocal measures,” including a phased withdrawal of Israel Defense Forces from all five positions it continues to hold in southern Lebanon. The pullback would be coordinated with a U.S.-led security mechanism, according to the statement. Lebanon’s cabinet earlier this month tasked the army with drafting a roadmap to remove Hezbollah’s weapons within 16 months, reversing a decades-long status quo in which the Shiite faction remained the country’s only armed non-state actor. The move follows a U.S.-brokered cease-fire in November that ended a 14-month war between Israel and Hezbollah but left Israeli troops stationed across the border and Israeli airstrikes continuing against what Jerusalem says are Hezbollah targets. Hezbollah leaders have condemned the disarmament plan, while Israeli officials argue that eliminating the group’s arsenal is essential for UN-mandated stability in southern Lebanon. Netanyahu’s offer, if accepted, would mark the first significant Israeli troop reduction in Lebanon since the cease-fire and could reshape the security architecture along the two nations’ shared frontier.
