Israel has signed a $35 billion natural gas supply deal with Egypt, marking the largest export agreement in Israel's history. The deal involves Israel's Leviathan gas field supplying gas to Egypt's NewMed. Analysts have described the agreement as a potential game changer for Egypt's energy sector. The contract was finalized despite ongoing conflict in Gaza and accusations by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi against Israel of genocide. The deal, which has been in place since 2019, has faced growing opposition within Egypt. Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that local gas production, which had declined from 6,600 million cubic feet per day to 4,100 million cubic feet, is expected to return to previous levels by 2027. Madbouly also emphasized that the gas agreement has not negatively impacted Egypt's strong political stance on Gaza. Additionally, Madbouly addressed concerns about state asset management and affirmed the government's commitment to freedom of expression and presenting multiple viewpoints on national issues.
