On August 10, 2025, an Israeli airstrike targeted a media tent outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, killing six journalists, including Anas al-Sharif, a prominent correspondent for Al Jazeera. The Israeli military stated that al-Sharif was deliberately targeted, accusing him of leading a Hamas militant cell, allegations that both al-Sharif and Al Jazeera have consistently denied. The strike also killed Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal, all affiliated with Al Jazeera. This attack has drawn widespread condemnation from press freedom groups, the United Nations, and human rights organizations, with the UN Human Rights Office describing it as a grave breach of international humanitarian law. Al Jazeera's managing editor Mohamed Moawad characterized the incident as part of a pattern of efforts to degrade and silence Palestinian journalists. The killing of al-Sharif, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist known for his frontline reporting and giving voice to Gaza's plight, has intensified concerns about the safety of journalists in the region. Funeral services for the five Al Jazeera journalists were held amid mourning in Gaza City. Reports indicate that Israel operates a special military unit tasked with identifying Gaza-based journalists it accuses of ties to Hamas to justify targeting them. The attack has sparked international tributes and highlighted the increasing risks faced by journalists covering the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
