Israel intensified its military campaign across Gaza on Saturday, bombarding residential areas and launching an artillery and drone strike on Al-Ahli (Baptist) Hospital in Gaza City. Palestinian outlets said at least seven people were killed and dozens wounded in the strike on the medical complex, the same facility where a blast in October 2023 drew global condemnation. Armed Israeli settlers, some accompanied by security forces, torched vehicles and attacked homes in the Al-Fakhit area of Masafer Yatta, Abu Falah near Ramallah and several neighbourhoods of Hebron, leaving multiple Palestinians injured. The assaults coincided with far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s push to build 3,401 housing units in the E1 corridor, a project critics say would sever East Jerusalem from the rest of the territory and dim prospects for a contiguous Palestinian state. The renewed fighting underscored Gaza’s worsening humanitarian crisis. Marah Abu Zuhri, a 20-year-old woman evacuated from the enclave under an Italian medical airlift, died in Pisa less than two days after arrival. Doctors cited severe physical deterioration linked to prolonged malnutrition, a condition aid agencies say is spreading rapidly across the territory. UN officials warn that nearly 12,000 children under five in Gaza are acutely malnourished after months of restricted aid flows. Israel says it is committed to mitigating civilian harm, but international pressure is mounting for an immediate cease-fire and unfettered humanitarian access.
