Israeli forces fired two tank shells at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis on 25 August, striking the same exterior staircase within nine minutes and killing at least 20 people, Palestinian health officials said. The attack, partly broadcast live, hit the largest functioning hospital in southern Gaza and was quickly followed by a second blast as medics, journalists and first responders gathered at the scene. Those killed included five Palestinian journalists—Reuters cameraman Hussam al-Masri, Associated Press freelancer Mariam Abu Dagga, Al Jazeera cameraman Mohammed Salama, NBC contributor Moaz Abu Taha and freelance reporter Ahmed Abu Aziz—along with medical staff, a civil-defence worker and patients. Dozens of others were wounded. The Israel Defense Forces said an initial inquiry showed troops had identified what they believed was a Hamas-operated surveillance camera on the hospital and “operated to remove the threat,” claiming six militants were among the dead. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the strike a “tragic mishap,” insisted journalists were not targeted and announced a formal military investigation. The back-to-back—or “double-tap”—strikes prompted condemnation from the United Nations, the Committee to Protect Journalists and governments in Europe and North America, which demanded an independent probe. U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters he was “not happy” about the incident, while media organisations urged Israel to explain the killing of their employees. Nasser Hospital has been struck several times during the 22-month war, and rights groups say repeated attacks on medical facilities and reporters may violate international humanitarian law. The CPJ counts almost 200 journalists killed in Gaza since the conflict began, making it the deadliest war for media workers in modern history.
