Israeli forces carried out two airstrikes on the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on 25 August, killing at least 20 people, according to the territory’s health ministry. The dead include five Palestinian journalists, medical staff, patients and a civil-defence worker, while dozens more were wounded. Health officials said the first missile struck the hospital’s fourth floor, a vantage point used by reporters, and the second hit minutes later as rescue teams and additional journalists arrived—a double-tap strike that was captured live on camera. Reuters cameraman Hussam Al-Masri, Al Jazeera cameraman Mohammed Salama, Associated Press freelancer Mariam Abu Dagga, NBC freelancer Moaz Abu Taha and Quds Feed contributor Ahmad Abu Aziz were among those killed. The Israel Defense Forces acknowledged firing two shells at the site, saying they had targeted a “Hamas camera”, and said an internal investigation was under way. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office expressed “deep regret”, adding that Israel does not deliberately target journalists or medical facilities. Reuters, the Associated Press and Al Jazeera confirmed the loss of their staff and demanded accountability. The United Nations, the Committee to Protect Journalists and French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the strike, urging protection for civilians and media workers. CPJ notes that nearly 200 journalists have been killed during the 22-month Gaza conflict, making it one of the deadliest wars for the press in modern times.
