Israel’s Mossad director David Barnea traveled to Doha on Thursday and met Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani, according to Israeli officials cited by Axios and Reuters. The previously unannounced visit aimed to revive stalled negotiations on a package deal that would free Israeli hostages held in Gaza and establish a lasting ceasefire. Barnea’s trip follows Israeli deliberations earlier in the week about sending a broader high-level delegation to Qatar. Israeli Channel 12 reported that during the meetings Barnea stressed Israel’s preference for a comprehensive agreement rather than the partial arrangements floated in earlier rounds, and warned that military options remained if talks fail to advance. Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, has mediated between Israel and Hamas since the Gaza war began in October 2023. Roughly 50 captives—about 20 of whom are believed to be alive—remain in Gaza. A breakthrough in Doha would be the first major step toward ending months of fighting and allowing larger flows of humanitarian aid into the enclave.
