New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is facing mounting criticism after a 2017 rap video resurfaced in which he sends “my love to the Holy Land Five,” the leadership of a now-defunct Texas charity convicted in 2008 of channeling more than $12 million to Hamas. The clip, highlighted on 21 June by the watchdog group Canary Mission, shows Mamdani—then performing under the stage name Mr. Cardamom—praising the quintet during his song “Salaam,” which he has described as reflecting his experience growing up Muslim in New York. Mayor Eric Adams and Republican contender Curtis Sliwa have both condemned the remarks, calling them disqualifying for anyone seeking to lead a city with the world’s largest Jewish population outside Israel. Mamdani, a Democratic state assemblyman polling second in most surveys ahead of the 24 June primary, has not publicly responded to requests for comment carried by local media. The video’s release follows separate allegations that Mamdani identified himself as “African-American” on past college applications, a claim critics say was intended to game affirmative-action policies. Together, the controversies have sharpened scrutiny of the 33-year-old socialist lawmaker as New York Democrats weigh their choice for the November mayoral election.
If it was revealed that Elon Musk put “African America—Black” on his college application, leftists would start burning down Tesla dealerships. But when Zohran Mamdani does it, leftists give him a pass.
According to this logic, all the white people born in Africa should check "African-American" on applications. There is no question that Mamdani knew what he was doing, and it's morally questionable at best. https://t.co/db52YVnzMy
Folks playing dumb to defend Zohran. Here is Census Bureau on “Black” or “African American.” Everyone (esp. if dad was Director of African Studies at Columbia) knows what is meant here is *not* a person of Indian descent who lived a bit in Africa. Mamdani knew what he was doing. https://t.co/QksVmtvFQB https://t.co/OErvJro2Ww
