US Envoy Meets Israeli Hostage Families Amid Hamas Videos, Gaza Famine, and Pressure on Netanyahu to End War
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has intensified humanitarian concerns as the United Nations and various NGOs warn of an imminent and widespread famine after more than 21 months of war. Israeli authorities have declared their objectives to liberate approximately 50 hostages still held by Hamas and to dismantle Hamas as a military and governing entity. Recently, Hamas released videos showing two emaciated Israeli hostages, including Evyatar David, who was captured during the October 7, 2023 attack. These videos have heightened public pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to seek an end to the Gaza war. Netanyahu expressed shock and condemnation over the harsh footage, while Israeli officials emphasize that the war will continue relentlessly until the hostages are freed. The U.S. special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has met with families of Israeli hostages in Tel Aviv and is reportedly working on a plan to end the conflict. Meanwhile, Gaza faces a severe humanitarian crisis characterized by starvation, malnutrition, and lack of vital services. UNICEF reports that an average of 28 children die daily in Gaza due to bombardments, malnutrition, and insufficient aid. The Gaza Strip is currently in the fifth stage of famine, with warnings of a looming health catastrophe and the emergence of syndromes such as marasmus and Guillain-Barré. The humanitarian situation is exacerbated by Israeli-imposed restrictions on aid deliveries, which Hamas and other sources describe as a deliberate policy of starvation and an act of collective punishment. Civilians in Gaza continue to suffer, with recent reports indicating that 27 people died searching for food amid escalating desperation. Discussions between Israel and the Trump administration regarding Gaza remain ongoing, but ceasefire negotiations appear stalled amid the mounting death toll and deteriorating conditions.
