The Houston Astros are promoting Brice Matthews, the club’s top prospect, from Triple-A Sugar Land for Friday’s series opener, according to people familiar with the decision. The 23-year-old infielder was originally slated to appear in next week’s All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta. Matthews is hitting .283 with a .400 on-base percentage and .476 slugging percentage, compiling 10 home runs, 39 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in 81 games this season while playing primarily second base. A first-round pick out of Nebraska in 2023, he is not yet on the 40-man roster. Houston is turning to the versatile right-handed hitter amid a spate of injuries. Center fielder Jake Meyers left Wednesday’s game with calf tightness and could join shortstop Jeremy Peña, sidelined by a fractured rib, on the injured list. The club on Thursday optioned infielder Shay Whitcomb and reinstated first baseman Christian Walker from the paternity list, clearing space for Matthews’ arrival.
