The Atlanta Braves have placed two pitchers on the 15-day injured list due to fractures. Left-handed ace Chris Sale, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, was sidelined with a fractured left ribcage sustained during a diving play in the ninth inning on June 19. The injury was described by Braves manager Brian Snitker as involving "a couple of broken ribs." Austin Cox was recalled to the team to fill the roster spot. Subsequently, pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach was also placed on the 15-day injured list on July 2 after fracturing his right elbow, an injury that occurred following his start against the Philadelphia Phillies. Schwellenbach is expected to miss at least four weeks, with hopes of returning in September. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees have placed right-handed pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. on the 15-day injured list retroactive to July 7 due to a left fibular head stress fracture. Leiter sustained the injury covering first base during an extra-inning game against Cincinnati and has not been given a timetable for his return. The Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Leiter on the roster.
