The San Francisco Giants reinstated third baseman Matt Chapman from the injured list on Saturday, ending a 23-game layoff caused by a bruised right hand. Utility infielder Sergio Alcántara was designated for assignment to make room on the roster. Chapman returned to the cleanup spot and manned third base at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, where the Athletics are playing home games this season. San Francisco defeated Oakland 7–2 in the opener, with Rocklin native Logan Webb limiting the A’s to two runs over 6⅔ innings and shortstop Willy Adames knocking in the club’s first four runs. Chapman reached base three times in his first appearance since June 8. Adames carried his momentum into Sunday, slugging a home run and collecting three RBIs, while rookie right-hander Hayden Birdsong and three relievers held Oakland in check as the Giants clinched the three-game series.
