Left-hander Robbie Ray threw his first complete game in eight seasons, limiting the Arizona Diamondbacks to three hits and two runs over 102 pitches as the San Francisco Giants won 7–2 at Chase Field on Thursday night. The performance came against Ray’s former club and gave San Francisco a split of the four-game series. Ray struck out seven and walked one, retiring Arizona on 78 pitches through eight innings before closing out the ninth. The 32-year-old, who is among the National League’s top 10 in both ERA and WHIP, improved to nine wins on the season and strengthened his candidacy for a second All-Star selection, with rosters set to be announced in three days. Early offense backed the veteran starter as the Giants jumped to a 4–0 lead, allowing manager Bob Melvin to rest a bullpen that had covered extra innings the previous night. San Francisco is 14–4 in Ray’s starts this year.
