Warner Bros. and its New Line label are in early talks to develop a prequel to Zach Cregger’s hit horror film “Weapons,” according to multiple industry reports. The prospective feature would explore the back-story of Aunt Gladys, the unsettling character portrayed by Amy Madigan. Cregger originally wrote and later cut a chapter on Gladys for pacing reasons, leaving material that studio executives now believe could anchor a stand-alone film. No agreements have been signed and the project has no timetable, people familiar with the discussions said. Interest in expanding the franchise follows the strong debut of “Weapons,” which opened 8 August with roughly $43 million in domestic ticket sales—outperforming projections by more than $10 million—and has reached $83 million worldwide through Monday. The performance bolsters Warner Bros.’ efforts to refresh its horror slate amid a generally soft market for the genre. Cregger is currently in Prague preparing a “Resident Evil” reboot for Sony, a project that earned him a reported $20 million salary and is scheduled for release on 18 September 2026. He also has original scripts, including the genre piece “Flood,” under consideration.
