Warner Bros.’ original horror release “Weapons” stormed the North American box office with an estimated $42.5 million in ticket sales from 3,202 cinemas, beating forecasts that had ranged as low as $30 million. The Zach Cregger–directed thriller added $27.5 million overseas—helped by a $3.6 million start in the U.K.—for a $70 million worldwide bow against a reported $38 million production budget. Audiences awarded the film an A- CinemaScore, an unusually strong grade for the genre, and IMAX and other premium screens generated 34 percent of domestic revenue, including $6.2 million in the format. The performance gives Warner Bros. its seventh No. 1 opening of 2025 and its sixth consecutive debut north of $40 million, an industry record for any studio in a single year. The result continues the company’s streak that already includes “Superman,” “A Minecraft Movie” and surprise hit “Sinners.” Disney’s family comedy sequel “Freakier Friday” opened in second place with $29 million domestically and $15.5 million from international markets, for a $44.5 million global launch—roughly matching its $45 million production cost. CinemaScore audiences graded the film an A. Marvel’s struggling “Fantastic 4” slipped 60 percent in its third frame to $15.5 million, lifting North American takings to $230 million. DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys 2” collected $10.4 million for a $43 million domestic and $84 million worldwide haul, while Paramount’s “The Naked Gun” remake earned $8.3 million to reach $33 million after two weekends. Among longer-running holdovers, Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” added $4.7 million domestically and $16.1 million abroad, edging its global total to $800 million. Warner Bros.’ “Superman” grossed another $7.8 million in the U.S. and Canada for $579 million worldwide, making it the top-earning Superman title domestically.
