A shallow earthquake with a preliminary magnitude estimated between 3.6 and 3.8 struck northern New Jersey early Sunday, sending light tremors across New York City and parts of the wider metropolitan area. The shaking began shortly after 2:20 a.m. Eastern time on 3 August and was widely felt in Manhattan, Brooklyn and other boroughs, as well as in neighboring New Jersey communities. There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.
