A magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck Pakistan’s capital region shortly after midnight on Sunday, shaking Islamabad, Rawalpindi and surrounding districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, the National Seismic Monitoring Centre said. The tremor was recorded at 00:10 AM local time (PKT). The quake was shallow, originating 10 kilometres below the surface, with its epicentre positioned about 15 kilometres southeast of Rawat, a suburb of Rawalpindi. Residents reported brief but noticeable shaking and left buildings as a precaution. Emergency services and local authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, but inspections of infrastructure and public facilities are under way. The event follows a magnitude-5.4 temblor felt across much of northern Pakistan a day earlier, underscoring heightened seismic activity in the region.
