Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet has been elected president of the National Basketball Players Association, replacing New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum. VanVleet will serve a four-year term at the helm of the 450-member union, which represents NBA players in collective-bargaining talks, licensing deals and workplace matters. The veteran point guard, who recently signed a two-year, $50 million contract extension with Houston, was chosen by player representatives during the union’s summer meetings. The new leadership slate also includes Grant Williams as first vice president, Mason Plumlee as secretary-treasurer, and vice presidents Jaylen Brown, Jaren Jackson Jr., Donovan Mitchell, Garrett Temple, Karl-Anthony Towns and Gabe Vincent.
