Willie Fritz on Conner Weigman: "He's a real old-fashioned type of quarterback."
Speaking at Day 2 of Big 12 Media Days in Frisco, Texas, University of Houston head coach Willie Fritz said the Cougars will move into their new football operations center on 25 July. The facility is intended to streamline player training and recovery as the program enters its second season in the expanded 16-team conference. Fritz added that quarterback Conner Weigman, a transfer from Texas A&M, has recovered from a lingering injury that dated back to his previous school and has been “fine since February.” The staff has clocked Weigman at nearly 21 mph in conditioning drills, and Fritz believes the junior “can be a top quarterback in the Big 12.” With a deeper roster and what Fritz called “legitimate competition” at multiple positions, Houston plans to use the first two or three games to finalize playing time allocations. “We want to take a big step forward in Year 2,” the coach said, framing the combination of upgraded facilities and Weigman’s arrival as cornerstones of the program’s push up the conference standings.
