Indiana men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries and assistants Kenny Johnson, Rod Clark and Drew Adams opened the NCAA’s first July evaluation period in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Wednesday by taking in the Adidas 3SSB Palmetto Road Championships. The staff joined a high-profile contingent of peers, including Kentucky’s John Calipari and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, to assess some of the nation’s top under-class prospects. Indiana’s priority target Latrell Allmond, a 6-foot-8 power forward ranked No. 42 in the 2026 class, logged 17 points, eight rebounds and two three-pointers in Team Loaded’s 78-57 win over Iowa United. After the game, Allmond said DeVries has “been there regularly” and praised the coach’s development plan and the impression IU made during his unofficial visit. Opposite Allmond was 7-foot-1 Arafan Diane, the No. 15 prospect in the class. The Hoosiers’ coaches also monitored Indiana Elite’s 16-and-under team. Class-of-2027 point guard Jason Gardner Jr. scored 27 points on 11-of-13 shooting in a 69-48 victory, while Indiana Elite edged ETG 103-100 in a later game behind Anthony Thompson’s 35 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 2.5 seconds left. Under NCAA rules, Division I staffs have two non-consecutive five-day windows in July to conduct in-person evaluations. DeVries, hired in April, is using the first window to cement relationships with 2026 and 2027 prospects as he rebuilds Indiana’s recruiting board ahead of his inaugural season in Bloomington.
