On August 1, 2025, hundreds of protesters gathered in Mississauga, Canada, to demonstrate against famine and mass starvation in Gaza. The protest, led in part by organizers from the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), featured participants clanging pots and pans to express outrage. The PYM organizers present are facing pending charges related to previous protest activities, including one individual who recently was among eleven arrested at a Toronto demonstration. Peel Police maintained a visible presence, blocking key routes such as Confederation Parkway and Rathburn Road, with some officers wearing balaclavas. During the event, police were criticized for their handling of incidents, including an unprovoked assault by a masked protester on a videographer, which police advised be reported despite the suspect remaining unidentified. Protesters condemned the Canadian government’s response, accusing it of complicity in what they described as genocide against Palestinians. The PYM and three other groups recently reported data alleging that Israel continues to import Canadian military weapon parts and ammunition despite an arms embargo in place since January 2024. Similar demonstrations occurred internationally, including in the Netherlands where protesters banged pots and pans at central train stations and outside the Egyptian embassy to protest Egypt's role in the Gaza blockade and to demand the release of political prisoners. In New York, Jewish activists from the group "Jewish Voices for Peace" held a sit-in outside offices of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, calling for an end to Israel’s starvation policy in Gaza; the protest led to the arrest of a council member. Additionally, a US activist detained by Israeli forces during the Handala flotilla has returned home. These coordinated protests reflect ongoing global opposition to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and scrutiny of international complicity in the blockade and arms trade.
