OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile application has recorded an estimated $2 billion in global consumer spending since its debut on iOS and Android in May 2023, according to new data from analytics firm Appfigures reported by TechCrunch. The app generated $1.35 billion in the first seven months of 2025 alone, a 673 percent jump from the same period a year earlier, and is now averaging roughly $193 million in monthly revenue. Appfigures estimates the app has been downloaded 690 million times worldwide, translating to lifetime revenue of $2.91 per install. U.S. users account for 38 percent of total spending—about $10 per download—while India leads in installs with 13.7 percent of the total. ChatGPT’s lifetime mobile takings are roughly 30 times higher than the combined totals of its nearest competitors, including Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft-backed Copilot, and xAI’s Grok; Grok has brought in just $25.6 million this year. With subscriptions still the primary source of income, OpenAI is evaluating additional monetization options. In an interview with The Verge, Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, said advertising is not imminent but could be introduced “very carefully and deliberately” in markets where users are unwilling to pay, adding that the company is also testing commerce links that would earn commissions on purchases made through the chatbot.
