The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to acquire running back Brian Robinson Jr. from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick, multiple outlets reported Friday. The trade will become official once the 26-year-old passes a physical examination. Washington will absorb about $1.25 million of Robinson’s $3.4 million salary for 2025, leaving San Francisco with an estimated $2.16 million cap charge in the final year of his rookie deal. Robinson posted a career-best 799 rushing yards and eight touchdowns last season and has 2,329 rushing yards and 15 scores over three NFL campaigns. The move strengthens a 49ers backfield led by Christian McCaffrey, who was limited to four games in 2024, and provides depth while backups Isaac Guerendo and rookie Jordan James work back from injuries. For the Commanders, the transaction clears carries for a retooled unit featuring Austin Ekeler and Jacory Croskey-Merritt. It marks the second trade between the clubs this year, following San Francisco’s spring deal that sent wideout Deebo Samuel to Washington for draft capital later used on running back Jordan James.
