The Cleveland Browns have named 40-year-old Joe Flacco their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season, head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed on Aug. 18. Flacco will lead Cleveland into its 7 Sept. opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, marking his first Week 1 start since 2022, when he filled in for the New York Jets. On Aug. 19, the Indianapolis Colts selected Daniel Jones to start their regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins, also set for 7 Sept. Jones, 28, signed a one-year, $14 million contract that includes about $13.15 million guaranteed after being released by the New York Giants last season and briefly joining Minnesota. Third-year passer Anthony Richardson moves to the backup role, though head coach Shane Steichen said Jones will have a "long leash" as the club's No. 1 quarterback. The decisions settle two of the league’s remaining quarterback competitions and underscore a preference for veteran stability. Flacco, the Super Bowl XLVII MVP, and Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in 2019, will try to revive franchises that missed the playoffs last year when they take the field in their respective openers.
