All 32 NFL clubs met Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline to trim preseason rosters from 90 to 53 players, setting the stage for the regular season that begins on Sept. 4. The San Francisco 49ers undertook the day’s most unorthodox reshuffle, keeping 21 combined offensive and defensive linemen—10 on offense and 11 on defense—while carrying only two healthy wide receivers and temporarily no punter. Veterans Robbie Chosen, Russell Gage Jr. and Isaiah Hodgins were let go, as was punter Thomas Morstead, who is expected to return once injured players move to reserve lists. In New England, the Patriots cut guard Cole Strange, their 2022 first-round pick, as part of 21 moves that also saw 2025 draftees Kobee Minor and Bradyn Swinson waived. Wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk and linebacker Jahlani Tavai were shifted to injured reserve. The Miami Dolphins finalized their roster without core special-teamer Quinton Bell, 2024 fifth-round edge rusher Mohamed Kamara and 2022 third-round linebacker Channing Tindall. Earlier Tuesday the club reached agreement with veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas and must clear a spot for him after the waiver period. Elsewhere, the Arizona Cardinals released quarterback Clayton Tune, opting to back up Kyler Murray with Jacoby Brissett, while the Chicago Bears activated starting cornerback Jaylon Johnson and cleared 11 roster spots. Teams can begin signing up to 16 practice-squad players at noon ET Wednesday, and additional churn is expected once waiver claims are processed.
