Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore was detained by police for two days, during which he was reportedly assaulted, including having his hand broken by a police officer. Authorities allegedly covered up the assault and denied him medical care, focusing instead on a leaked photo of the injury. Sowore was held in an overcrowded cell with over 30 other detainees, including suspected kidnappers and fraudsters. His detention sparked widespread condemnation from human rights groups, labor unions such as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), youth organizations, and prominent figures including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who demanded his immediate and unconditional release. Protests were organized across multiple Nigerian cities, with demonstrators picketing police commands and storming police headquarters in Abuja and Lagos. Sowore’s legal team criticized police statements and demanded the return of his confiscated AI eyeglasses. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, faced calls for removal amid accusations of shielding officers involved in the assault. Following his release, Sowore vowed to resume protests, particularly at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) headquarters, over the withholding of a discharge certificate for a female corps member, Rita 'Raye' Uguamaye, who had criticized the government. Meanwhile, Nigerian police filed fresh charges against Sowore, including inciting mutiny by leading a police protest demanding improved welfare and pensions, with arraignment set for August 14. Separately, an incident involving a female passenger assaulting an Ibom Air flight attendant at Lagos airport led to the passenger's lifetime ban by the airline and court remand. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) called for eyewitness accounts on the incident, while the Aviation Minister promised sanctions against officials who shared a nude video of the passenger. Human rights organizations have demanded investigations into police abuses during Sowore’s detention and have called for judicial reforms to address police impunity.
