Thousands of North Korean laborers are being covertly sent to Russia to work under harsh conditions reminiscent of forced labor. These workers endure 18-hour shifts, constant surveillance, and minimal freedom as they support Russia's wartime economy amid ongoing labor shortages caused by the invasion of Ukraine. Investigations and interviews with six North Korean workers who fled Russia since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as well as government officials and researchers, have revealed the extent of these conditions. The laborers are primarily assigned to construction projects critical to Moscow's war efforts, highlighting the reliance on North Korean forced labor to sustain Russia's military economy.
