U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said Beijing should face international scrutiny for what he described as Chinese subsidies that help sustain Russia’s war in Ukraine. In an interview with Fox Business on Tuesday, Whitaker argued that China has “miscalculated” by supporting Moscow and must be “called out” for aiding the Kremlin’s military campaign. Whitaker’s remarks add to mounting U.S. criticism of China’s economic and technological links with Russia, which Washington contends soften the impact of Western sanctions imposed after the 2022 invasion. While the ambassador did not specify punitive measures, he suggested that NATO allies should increase pressure on Beijing to curb assistance that, in his words, is “subsidizing this killing that is happening on the battlefields in Ukraine.”
