A suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden vehicle struck a Pakistani military convoy in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan near the Afghan border early Saturday, killing at least 13 soldiers and wounding roughly 29 people, including women and children, according to a statement from the army. The blast, which hit a mine-resistant vehicle at about 7:45 a.m. local time, was powerful enough to shatter windows and collapse the roofs of nearby houses, local administrators told reporters. The Hafiz Gul Bahadur faction of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the bombing, AFP reported. The military, meanwhile, accused militants backed by India of orchestrating the attack—an allegation New Delhi’s foreign ministry rejected. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the bombing as a “cowardly act,” and Army Chief General Asim Munir vowed “swift and decisive retribution.” The army said it killed 14 militants in a follow-up operation in the region. The attack is one of the deadliest against security forces this year and highlights a resurgence of militant violence in Pakistan’s northwest, where hundreds of security personnel have been killed since January.
