President Donald Trump’s job-approval numbers show an unusually wide spread in newly released national surveys conducted around last week’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. A poll by InsiderAdvantage of 1,000 likely voters taken Aug. 15–17 found 54% approving and 44% disapproving of Trump’s performance, a 4-point rise from the firm’s July survey and a 10-point net swing in his favor. Pollster Matt Towery said support strengthened among voters under 65 and improved among African-American and Hispanic respondents. By contrast, a Reuters/Ipsos survey of 4,446 U.S. adults that closed Aug. 18 put the president’s approval at 40%, unchanged from late July and matching the lowest level of his second term. The poll showed approval among Hispanic respondents slipping to 32%, while 54% of all adults— including one in five Republicans—said Trump is too sympathetic toward Russia. Two other polls land between those extremes. An A--rated Echelon Insights survey conducted Aug. 15–17 recorded approval at 47% and disapproval at 51%, while Rasmussen Reports’ Aug. 18 daily tracking also showed a 47% approval figure. The divergence highlights methodological differences, with sampling frames ranging from likely voters to all adults.
