New opinion surveys show a marked uptick in Republican support for Ukraine, narrowing the partisan gap on U.S. policy toward Russia’s invasion just days before former President Donald Trump meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. A Pew Research Center poll conducted Aug. 4-10 among 3,554 adults found 64 % of Americans sympathize more with Ukraine, up five points since March. Sympathy among Republicans climbed to 55 % from 45 %, while Democratic support held at 83 %. Only 2 % of respondents sided with Russia. The same Pew survey shows the public evenly split on whether the United States has a responsibility to help Ukraine defend itself, with 50 % saying it does and 47 % saying it does not. Republican acknowledgment of such a responsibility has risen to 35 %, a 12-point gain since March. Additional polling reinforces the shift. University of Maryland’s Critical Issues Poll reports that 54 % of Americans now favor supporting Kyiv “for as long as it takes,” the highest level since early 2023. Chicago Council data indicate the share of Republicans who believe Washington should send more weapons to Ukraine has jumped to 51 % from 30 % six months ago, while those who say the U.S. provides too much aid have fallen to 30 %. The movement in public sentiment comes as Western allies worry Trump could press for territorial concessions when he meets Putin without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy present. The latest figures suggest the former president will face a domestic electorate that remains largely skeptical of Russia and increasingly favorable toward sustained assistance to Ukraine.
About three-in-ten Americans (31%) say Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a major threat to U.S. interests. Democrats continue to be much more likely than Republicans to view Russia’s invasion as a major threat to U.S. interests (43% vs. 20%). https://t.co/WkJB5RjM9N https://t.co/tBexbv2O8W
American's support for US military aid to Ukraine has been consistently high for 3 1/2 years of war. The current turn of the GOP opinion is welcome; it reflects that Americans want two things: (a) the war to end; (b) Ukraine remain free and independent. https://t.co/Ywqt7NDvvB
