A year after the July 13, 2024 assassination attempt on then-candidate Donald Trump, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee released a report describing a “cascade of preventable failures” by the U.S. Secret Service. Investigators said inadequate site surveys, poor rooftop coverage and slow coordination with local police allowed 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks to fire eight shots from an adjacent building, grazing Trump’s ear and killing firefighter Corey Comperatore. A separate Government Accountability Office assessment reached similar conclusions, warning that agents on the ground never received classified threat intelligence flagged before the rally. Six agents have been suspended without pay for up to 42 days, but the Senate panel said the disciplinary measures fall short and urged the agency to consider broader personnel action and structural reforms. Pressure for greater transparency is mounting. Senator Josh Hawley asked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to declassify all Butler-related documents by 30 July, arguing that the public still lacks a full account of what went wrong. In the House, Republican members introduced a resolution condemning the attack, commemorating Comperatore and the wounded, and reaffirming that the Secret Service “is central to upholding constitutional values.” President Trump, now in office, told Fox News he is “satisfied” with multiple briefings on the episode but acknowledged that agents “made mistakes,” including failing to secure the rooftop used by the shooter. In a separate White House statement, he said “God alone” spared his life and called on Americans to “fight” political violence. The Secret Service says it is “laser-focused” on overhauling training, intelligence sharing and advance work, yet lawmakers from both parties continue to press for answers on motive, accountability and whether the agency is prepared to prevent a similar breach during the 2026 mid-term campaign cycle.
