Portugal’s Socialist Party leader José Luís Carneiro warned Prime Minister Luís Montenegro that continued cooperation with the far-right Chega party would sever the government’s working relationship with the PS. Speaking after a meeting of the party’s National Political Commission in Lisbon, Carneiro said the PS "can never be placed on the same level as a party that attacks democratic values" and insisted the premier must decide "with whom he wishes to build state solutions." Carneiro’s remarks follow Montenegro’s talks with Chega on tightening immigration and nationality laws, including a contentious Foreigners Act due for final parliamentary votes on Wednesday. The PS has supported the creation of a new border police unit but opposes other measures it says were drafted "at break-neck speed." The centre-right Social Democratic Party, which Montenegro leads, and Chega are expected to approve the bill. The socialist chief demanded that Montenegro disclose details of what Chega’s leader called a recent "principle of agreement" reached with the government. Failure to clarify that deal, Carneiro said, would show the prime minister "not up to the responsibilities he holds." Carneiro also criticised the minority government’s broader record, citing setbacks in health, education, income and economic policy, and called the alignment with Chega "a grave error whose impacts remain to be assessed." President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has signalled he may ask the Constitutional Court to review the immigration legislation if questions of legality persist.
