Portugal is currently battling multiple large wildfires amid an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching up to 45°C. At the peak of the firefighting efforts, more than 3,700 firefighters and 1,200 ground vehicles, along with 37 aerial units, were deployed to combat 17 severe forest fires. As the situation evolved, the number of active firefighters in Portugal decreased to around 2,700 as some wildfires came under control. The Portuguese government has declared a state of alert due to the extreme heat expected in the coming days. Neighboring Spain is also affected by wildfires and the heatwave, with several departments placed under orange vigilance. The civil security authorities have issued warnings about the ongoing risks posed by the fires. This heatwave is part of a broader pattern of extreme temperatures affecting parts of Europe, including the Nordic countries experiencing unprecedented heat.
