Romanian President Nicușor Dan on Tuesday signed a decree appointing legal scholar Dacian Cosmin Dragoș as judge of the Constitutional Court for a nine-year term that begins on 13 July. Dragoș succeeds Livia Stanciu, whose mandate has expired, completing the one-third renewal of the nine-member court required every three years. Dragoș, 49, is professor of administrative and European law at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and a doctoral supervisor. His academic credentials include a Marie Curie fellowship at Michigan State University and extensive work on Romania’s Administrative Code and related procedural reforms. Beyond academia, he served three years as a legal expert in the government team that successfully defended Romania in the Roșia Montană arbitration, a 2024 case in which the state avoided a US$6.7 billion claim. He was also a World Bank consultant on public procurement (2020-2023) and twice chaired the National Council of Ethics for Research and Innovation. Under the constitution, the president, Senate and Chamber of Deputies each name three Constitutional Court judges. The legislature recently chose Mihai Busuioc and Csaba Asztalos, meaning the Court now has its full complement for the next cycle.
