Russia’s largest carrier, Aeroflot PJSC, grounded flights on Monday after a failure in its information systems triggered what the company called a “forced adjustment” to its schedule. Departure boards at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport showed a cascade of cancellations, and the airline’s website and mobile app were inaccessible. Aeroflot said it cancelled more than 40 flights and delayed at least 10 others, mostly on domestic routes but also to Minsk and Yerevan. Russian prosecutors later put the number of cancellations above 60 and opened a criminal investigation into what they described as a hacking attack. Technical teams are working to restore normal operations and passengers have been offered refunds or rebooking once systems are back online. A statement posted on social media by a group calling itself Silent Crow, together with Belarus-based Cyberpartisans BY, claimed responsibility, linking the assault to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The hackers said a year-long operation gave them deep access to Aeroflot’s network, allowing them to destroy 7,000 servers and exfiltrate 22 terabytes of data—assertions that could not be independently verified. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the disruption “alarming”, while senior lawmaker Anton Gorelkin said the incident showed that Russia was under attack “on all fronts, including the digital one.” The Transport Ministry and aviation regulator have not commented publicly on the extent of the damage or the expected duration of the outage. Despite Western sanctions that have curtailed international routes, Aeroflot remains among the world’s 20 largest airlines, carrying 55.3 million passengers last year. The breach underscores the growing cybersecurity risks facing critical infrastructure as the conflict in Ukraine increasingly spills into cyberspace.
