The Kremlin said it no longer sees a path to meeting Russia’s objectives in Ukraine through diplomacy and will therefore press ahead with military operations. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters Moscow remains “interested” in a political settlement but that such an outcome “does not appear possible at the moment.” Peskov made the remarks after former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly expressed disappointment with Vladimir Putin following a phone call between the two leaders. According to the Kremlin, Putin reiterated to Trump that Russia would prefer a negotiated resolution, yet the conditions for meaningful talks have not materialised. Moscow is still waiting for dates for a third round of direct negotiations with Kyiv, Peskov added, and said any prospective Putin-Trump meeting this summer would require substantial preparation.
