U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said an upcoming meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been secured, crediting Trump with creating the conditions for direct talks that had eluded his predecessor. “Nobody else could have created the conditions that lead to a meeting like this,” Hegseth told reporters, adding that Putin had not been willing to engage when Joe Biden was in office. Hegseth suggested the leaders will discuss ending the war in Ukraine and hinted that negotiations could involve land swaps and other concessions, acknowledging that “no one's going to be happy” with the compromises required. Details on the date, venue and format of the talks have not been disclosed.
