U.S. President Donald Trump said on 22 August that he will decide within two weeks whether to impose “massive” additional sanctions, new tariffs, both measures or no action at all against Russia, depending on progress toward ending Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of peace efforts and said he would determine which side bears responsibility if Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fail to agree to direct talks. “I’m not happy about any of it,” he said, adding that he expects to know “which way I’m going” in roughly fourteen days. The warning follows Trump’s 15 August meeting with Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, after which the U.S. leader urged the two wartime presidents to meet. Kyiv has repeatedly asked Western partners to tighten pressure on Moscow, while Putin has publicly praised Trump’s leadership but offered no concrete concessions. The impending U.S. decision adds fresh uncertainty to diplomatic efforts as the conflict moves into its fourth year.
