On July 4, 2025, Ukraine launched drone attacks on Sergiyev Posad, a city approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Moscow, resulting in several explosions and damage to a power substation. The attacks caused partial blackouts in the city and injured at least one person, according to local officials and Russian sources. The power infrastructure damage included a substation in the Zvyozdochka neighborhood, affecting electricity supply in the religiously significant district. Later the same day, Ukraine reported that Russian forces struck the power line supplying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's largest nuclear facility located in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine. This strike caused the plant to lose all external power, forcing it to rely entirely on emergency diesel generators. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that all external power lines to the plant were disabled, raising concerns about the safety and stability of the nuclear facility. Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko attributed the power outage to deliberate Russian actions. The blackout at Zaporizhzhia marked the first time since 2023 that the plant was disconnected from the grid, with the loss of power affecting the operation of critical systems, including cooling pumps. The situation remains precarious, with the plant operating under emergency conditions amid ongoing conflict.
