Gerson, the Brazilian midfielder and captain of Flamengo, has officially transferred to Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg after the latter paid his €25 million (approximately R$160 million) release clause. The payment was made in full and confirmed by Flamengo on July 1, 2025, following the team's elimination from the FIFA Club World Cup. Gerson's contract with Zenit is reported to be for five years. Despite interest from Saudi club Al Nassr, Gerson chose to honor his prior commitment to Zenit. Flamengo announced the termination of Gerson's contract on July 4, 2025, following the player's resignation and the payment of the release clause. The midfielder leaves Flamengo after 253 appearances and 12 titles, having been a key figure in the club's recent successes. Gerson is expected to complete his medical examination and contract signing with Zenit within 24 to 48 hours after the announcement. Prior to his departure, Gerson held a farewell party with Flamengo teammates and friends in Rio de Janeiro.
