Liverpool confirmed on Saturday that Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez has left the Premier League champions to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. The 26-year-old signed a three-year contract that runs to June 2028, becoming the latest high-profile player to move to the Gulf state’s top division. Financial terms were not disclosed, but British and Spanish media put the guaranteed fee at about €53 million (£46.2 million), with performance-related add-ons capable of lifting the total to roughly £56.6 million. Nunez had joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 for an initial €75 million, then a club-record outlay for the Anfield side. Nunez departs after registering 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 appearances and helping Liverpool reclaim the Premier League title last season, although he started only eight league matches under head coach Arne Slot. His sale will offset part of the close to £300 million Liverpool have already spent this summer on recruits such as Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. At Al-Hilal, Nunez will play under former Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi, whose squad has already been bolstered by the arrivals of left-back Theo Hernández and several other European imports. The Riyadh club, runners-up in the Saudi league last term, are bidding for a record-extending 20th domestic crown as the country’s ambitious recruitment drive continues.
