The kingdom has engaged consulting firms to assess the feasibility of the project amid a broader scaling back of large-scale construction and investment initiatives due to rising costs and lower oil prices. Concurrently, Saudi Arabia has signed an $8.3 billion deal to expand its domestic wind and solar capacity by 15 gigawatts in a single phase, the largest such expansion globally. This renewable energy push aims to displace one million barrels per day of crude oil currently used for power generation, thereby freeing more oil for export and targeting 50% renewable energy by 2030.
