Adam Lallana has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37, bringing to a close a career that began with Southampton in 2006 and spanned almost two decades. The midfielder confirmed the decision on 25 June, shortly after completing a second spell at St Mary’s following the 2024-25 season. Lallana made 305 Premier League appearances and earned 34 caps for England, scoring three international goals. After rising through Southampton’s academy and captaining the club, he moved to Liverpool in 2014, where he won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup. Later stints with Brighton & Hove Albion and a brief loan to AFC Bournemouth preceded his return to Southampton last year. Reflecting on his career, Lallana said he felt “gratitude and pride” for the opportunities he received, adding that representing England was “the greatest honour.” He departs the game with a reputation for technical skill and versatility, and he has not yet detailed plans for his post-playing career.
