Liverpool opened their Premier League title defence with a 4–2 victory over Bournemouth on Friday, a match dominated by tributes to forward Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash on 3 July alongside his brother André Silva. Before kick-off Anfield observed a minute’s silence and sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” while a mosaic displaying the brothers’ initials and shirt numbers filled two stands. The club has retired Jota’s No. 20 across all teams and added a “Forever 20” emblem to players’ kits for the season. New signing Hugo Ekitike put Liverpool ahead in the 37th minute and set up Cody Gakpo just after half-time, but a brace from Antoine Semenyo levelled the match. Late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah, the latter after a Wataru Endo assist, secured the win. Manager Arne Slot said the performance showed “professionalism amid emotion” as Liverpool began life without one of their key forwards.
