Spain’s two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí has rejoined the national squad for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 after a brief hospital stay with viral meningitis that initially put her participation in doubt. The Royal Spanish Football Federation said the 27-year-old midfielder was discharged on 29 June, four days after she was admitted with a high fever. Bonmatí linked up with her teammates in Lausanne on 30 June and resumed light training on 2 July. She made her competitive return the following day, coming on as a second-half substitute in Spain’s opening group match, a 5–0 victory over Portugal in Berne. Speaking after the recovery session on 4 July, Bonmatí said she feels “estupendamente” and trained at full intensity. Goalkeeper Cata Coll (tonsillitis) and forward Alba Redondo (knock) remained sidelined, but head coach Montse Tomé expects Bonmatí to have a larger role in the next fixture. Spain face Belgium on 6 July, needing another win to seal early qualification from a group that also includes Italy. The midfielder’s swift return bolsters a side already viewed as one of the tournament favourites following its emphatic start.
